Our community already faces a shortage of affordable, livable housing, and our housing crisis will only worsen as we recover from the coronavirus pandemic. Housing is a human right, and we cannot limit efforts to build more housing. Everyone deserves to have a permanent roof over their head, whether they are unhoused, low income, or struggling with mental illness or substance abuse. John will fight to promote all types of housing development as we restore The Bronx.
John's Goals:
-
Introduce legislation to create a NYC air rights bank and change the zoning resolution to allow religious institutions, non-profits, and other property owners such as NYCHA and the MTA to earn revenue by selling their air rights which can be transferred anywhere within the district and allowing for at least 5,000 new apartments
-
Legalizing rental apartments in areas that currently limit opportunities for homeownership and rentals because of the city’s outdated land-use rules.
-
Expand the basement apartment (Accessory Dwelling Unit) program to build more housing at a cheaper cost and help Bronx homeowners earn additional rental income.
-
Transform the unused Borough Hall site at Tremont Park into a youth recreation center and redevelop the vacant Old Fordham Library as an economic development and job training center.
-
Work with the Bronx delegation to fund the Crotona and Tremont Park Master Plan.
